My Multimedia Resources
Introduction:  
This page is provided to make it easier for my friends to find the information on the vast internet that I have spent many hours finding.  Hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor!  I hope you find the necessary links below and take a moment to learn all these sites have to offer.
   First, a quick note to you all...I was hesitant to make the OS 9 to OS X switch but over the past few months I have grown to appreciate the stability and simplicity it offers.  Whatever your circumstance may be, when your situation allows, I would encourage the migration to OS X.  Though at first it's like "eeks, why am I doing this?" within a couple weeks you'll be able to answer this question for yourself.  For those still using a Windows PC, first off, my condolances.  Second, you just don't know how much you are missing!  Take some time and learn how easy it can be to make the switch and what MacOS X has to offer! 

MacOS X [and Unix] Users:

•Quicktime Pro from Apple Computer: If you don't have it, get it.  This is a fundamental software for most multimedia projects on the Mac.
•Quicktime Developer Tools:  Resource for server delivery, encoding, production,, and web casting with Quicktime.
         ***Still need a little help understanding all why all the hype over Quicktime?  Check this out!.
Hacker's Guide to Quicktime, by Michael A. Lowry
•Quicktime 6 MPEG-Playback Component:  Probably best you read about it here.
•VideoLAN : A multimedia player for various formats (MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, etc.) as well as DVD's, VCD's, SVCD's and various streaming protocols.  Best of all, it's free!  When QT has let me down, this has been the answer especially with ".avi" files so often used with Windows.
•MPlayer:  10 pixels to full screen player with play lists. (an alternative to VideoLAN when playing .avi files, and user interface is much better.)
•MPlayerOSX:  Runs on MacOSX 10.2 Jaguar.  Site also has a forum and other downloads related to the MPlayerOSX.
•MPlayerOSXgui Home Page:  After installation you can play almost all 3ivx, DivX 3,4,5 and other codecs files in the fullscreen mode.
•Cellulo: Cellulo is a free video player for Mac OS X with many features.
•ConvertToQt: Produces a Quicktime file with the converted Avi and mp3 together. ffmpeg.component has to be installed first.
•3ivx Codec:  Assists Quicktime playing .avi files.
•DiVA: A high speed, high quality MPEG-2 to QuickTime transcoder which features an all YUV graphics pipeline and pro-level image scaling.
•Divx: Mac_Divx is becoming one of the best codecs for quality compression.
•DivX Doctor II - Often is able to update DivX .avi videos to 3ivx QuickTime (.mov) videos, so the glitches inherrant in the AVI format will be fixed.
•DivxRay:  DivXRay is a user-friendly movie converter to convert MPEG-2-Program Streams into AVI files by using ffmpeg 0.4.6.
DivxRay Home: Hope you speak their language.  ;-)
•EasyDivx: EasyDivx is a simple utility to make playable versions of DivX movies on MacOS X 10.1.
ffmpeg Codecs:  Alternative open source DivX Codec. Plays MS-MPEG4v1, MS-MPEG4v2, DivX 3.11 alpha, DivX 4, DivX 5, 3ivx (Delta 4 and later) and XVID.
•D-Vision: Application that permits the encoding of DivX movies by use of ffmpeg
•Split-Me: With the help of Mencoder, an application that splits and joins Divx movies!
MacTheRipper: A MacOS X application to RIP DVD's!
•MacMPEG2Decoder:  Probably the most affordable MPEG2 to QuickTime application for MacOS since it is totally free.  Brought to you by the 3ivx.com team.
•MPEG2 Works: DVD*SVCD*VCD Authoring Suite, and they even have a FORUM!
•MS-MPEG4v2:
MS-MPEG4v2 is a codec based almost exclusively on FFMpeg and DivOSX
•MacVCD : Very thankful Merith Technology is around, just waiting for the "Save to self-contained Movie" option in OS X.
•VersionTracker:  Can't find a place to download something?   This is probably the place to go first!
•MacUpdate.com:  Another great source of files.
•MacUpdate Video subcatagory link, nice to browse on occassion to see what's new.
•VCDhelp.org:  A huge and overwhelming site with answers to most questions concerning video/audio formats and what can be done to them.
•VCDhelp info. for MacOS X: Only a small list but at least it's a start.
•VCDGearX: A standalone program for Mac OS X featuring conversion for a variety of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 file types with a great GUI!
•VCDTools: A bundle of 4 tools that makes its easier/possible to master vcds/svcds on Mac. [vcdXrip, vcdImager, vcdXbuild and vcdXgen]
•VCD Builder: A free program for Mac OS X for creating VCD and SVCD disc images from pictures and MPEG movies.
•HQ VCD Sync:  This guide is to create a perfectly synced VCD or SVCD with freeware tools.
•Hyperion:  A GUI interface that will take WMA files in groups or individually and convert them to AC3, MP2, MP3, or WAV (PCM U8) format.
•D-Link:  A MacOS software to encode various MPG formats.  Nice GUI!
•MencoderOSX  -  Direct DVD to DiVX ripper.
•Mac Guide to DVD Ripping using OSEx.
•Sizzle: Designed a tool for Mac OS X 10.2 and later that helps in the creation of reasonably basic, no-frills DVD Video discs.
•forty-two:  forty-two is comprised of the forty-two.app GUI, the dvdmp and dvdvx engines and certain tools used for video compression and conversion. It's simple, hassle-free tool for converting NTSC DVDs to other formats, such as DiVX, SVCD or VCD.
•AfterDawn.com:  Main page with a huge forum discussing ripping and converting most any format into any other format.
•AfterDawn.com Mac Forum : Mac DVD ripping forum.
•MediaPipe:  Allows you to manipulate media on MacOS X, allowing one to build, decode, filter, encode and even stream files.
•MediaPipe's Creator Tools:  If you've made it this far, you are probably a cut above the rest.  Has many great technical resources.
•A Guide to SVCD and Menu creation on Mac.("MissingMPEGTool")
•How to trick your (Sony) DVD player into playing SVCD's.
•Squeed's SVCD/VCD Help: The online community for VCD & SVCD creation on the MAC. There is no PC talk allowed here.
•ffmpegX
:  A Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). It can decode MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (aka DIVX4/5), VOB, AVI MS-MPEG4 V3 (aka DIVX 3), WAV, Real Audio, H263(+) (aka RealVideo 1.0), PGM, YUV, PPM, AC3, PCM8/16 bits, mulaw/Alaw, WMA, SUN AU format, MPEG audio layer 2, MPEG audio layer 3, MJPEG and even more formats. Wow!
Shorten:  This is a lossless compression app. for audio files, generally made from CD-quality source and plays '.SHN' music files.
•Firestarter FX: A Mac OS X only burning application, allows you to duplicate all kind of CDs (even those that other Mac OS X applications won't), burn VCDs and SVCDs, and have access to unique features such as overburning and CDDB access!


Windows [and Linux] Users:

•VideoLAN : VLC (VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVD's, VCD's, SVCD's and various streaming protocols.  Best of all, it's free!
•PowerDVD:  a software based DVD [MPEG2 format] player.
•WinDVD: another software based DVD [MPEG2 format] player.
•DVD2SVCD:  Just as the name states, a tool to convert your DVD's to SVCD's.
•Copy DVD: For $20 you can copy ANY DVD to a CD-R! No DVD burner is required.
•AfterDawn.com:  Huge forum discussing ripping and converting most any format into any other format.
•VCDhelp.com:  A huge and overwhelming site with answers to most questions concerning video/audio formats and what can be done to them.
•VCDhelp.com helps by listing all available players, converters, extracters, etc. for each format.  Here's that list.
•Divx Divx_Windows has become one of the best codecs for quality compression.
•Divx for Linux:  Just as the title says, Divx for the Linux platform.
•GNU VCDImager: A full-featured mastering suite for authoring, disassembling and analyzing Video CD's and Super Video CD's.
•KVCD.net: Claims to modify to the standard MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 GOP structure and Quantization Matrix.  Still confusing to me.
•THE MPEG Home Page: The Moving Picture Experts Group is in charge of the development of standards for coded representation of digital audio and video.
•Freeware MPEG Encoders: For all of those avi2vcd, avi2mpg1, and wav2mp file encoders and resources.
•Everything MPEG: MPEG pointers and resources, very nice site for MPEG technology.
•Mplayer for Linux:  Appears to be a fairly complete player for the Linux platform, read more about it here.
•MJPEG: A set of tools for recording videos and playback, cut-and-paste editing and MPEG compression of audio and video under Linux.


General [mostly Movie] Information:
•The Internet Movie Database:  One of the best pages to see what new movies are out and for info. about movie, actors, etc.
•Apple Quicktime Movie Trailers:  A great resource to quickly find the movie trailer of a new or recent movie. [Hope you have quicktime!]

•Movie Trailers: Looking for a movie trailer for a movie playing now or in the past, this is a great place to start!
•DealMac & DealChat: DealMac quickly lists the best prices for various Mac products, while DealChat is a great resource for your Mac questions.
•The Woz Homepage Links:  Difficult to believe there is a Mac site on the internet not already listed here, thanks to a personal friend of mine.

And Now, the Other Side...This is provided just to allow some introduction into another side of the internet.  You've been warned. ;-)

•Aquisition: A gnutella client built using code from the LimeWire gnutella client, but MUCH faster and overall superior.  Here's their forum.
•Tracker-Tracker
: A search engine for Hotline and Carracho.
•Carracho: A MacOS system combining services such as real-time conferences, file transfers, and newgroups in a user-friendly environment.
•Pitbull Pro:  Once Pitbull Pro puts its "teeth" into the connection, it will not stop until the job at hand is done or until you call it off.
•Hotline-Tools: Creaters of Pitbull Pro, and other innovative Macintosh utlities for hotline users that allow them to get the most out of the hotline community.
•Ted's Hotline Page: Nice resource to introduce you to Hotline, etc.
•KDX:  A "Bulletin Board System"-styled encrypted internet communications system that provides chat, messaging, news, file transfer, and trackers, etc.
